Your next project is the sort of thing that motion graphics artists deal with all the time – logo animation. Imagine this scenario: you have been hired by a newly-formed production company to create an animated logo that will play before the company’s films. You are given a name, graphic, and music options, but nothing else to work with. It’s up to you to create a memorable logo that can be animated in a dynamic, engaging way.
I used an online registry service to generate business names from terms like “cinema” and “motion graphics.” Each of you has been assigned one of these names, along with a stock graphic. Your first task should be to lay out the graphic with text in order to create the logo itself. Then, you should create an animated version of that logo set to music. I’ve included a folder with several royalty-free music options. Each is under ten seconds long, which is the maximum length of the animation: between five and seven seconds is probably ideal.
Be really thoughtful about things like font choice and color as you work on this project. A logo needs to be both visually interesting and easy to read. Try different treatments – all caps, all lowercase, putting the text on two lines or one line, etc.. The animation itself doesn’t need to be especially elaborate, but it should reveal the logo in an engaging way.
- You must use the name and logo that you have been assigned, but you can incorporate other media as well, as long as it is royalty-free (or you create it yourself)
- The finished animation should be between four and ten seconds long
- The logo must be animated in some way
- You should incorporate sound into the animation; you may either use the music provided to you or find another short piece of royalty-free audio
- The resolution of the finished piece should be 1920 by 1080, with a frame rate of 24
This project is due next Wednesday, March 6 – however, you will about an hour to work on it during class that day. Please come to class with the project started, so that you can complete it by the end of the period.
You can download your assigned graphics and music options at this link. Have fun!
