Classy Class Credits Created with Composites
For your next project, you’ll be creating a longer title sequence using footage that we film in class together. Each member of the class will be filmed against a black or white void. You’ll be given the footage to stylize, composite, and edit together to the music of your choosing.
The obvious point of inspiration for this project is True Detective, which has had unique and compelling opening titles across all three seasons. You don’t need to follow that model exactly, but I would like you to incorporate some multiple exposure compositing (as discussed in Lesson 5) into your work. Here are the parameters of the project:
- You must include the name of each class member, along with footage of that person. However, you do not need to match up the names with the footage on screen – feel free to play around with the order, if you like. For example, you could have multiple people on screen at once.
- The last title should be the name of this class: Motion Graphics & Title Design.
- You must include some multiple exposure compositing techniques into your project. You don’t need to do so for every shot, though.
- You should only use footage that is royalty-free – this can include stock footage or stills, royalty-free archival media, or footage that you capture yourself. Check out the Resources section for links to stock media websites.
- You should include some music and/or sound elements in your sequence. You may only use royalty-free music – again, check out the Resources section for some links.
- The finished piece should be around one minute long, but you don’t need to hit that time exactly; I’m more concerned with content and style than running time.
- The finished piece should be rendered using the H.264 codec and the High Quality 1080 HD preset.
- Send me your finished project before class on February 27.
Here are the names of everyone in the class: Gray Deuber, Ryan Gannon, Alex Gao, Justin Guzman, Ana Kola, Meredith Langs, Simone McLaren, Julie Spierer, Craig Terry, Charles Zhang.
UPDATE: Download the footage here!
In addition to using composited footage thoughtfully, really consider things like your font choice and the tone of your imagery. You don’t need to match the dark mood of True Detective, but your piece should have a consistent theme. Your music choice will play into this a lot as well.
