Project Details: Analog Titles

Lovingly Handcrafted

While a lot of our time in this class will be spent exploring cutting edge digital technology, a lot of work is still done in the analog realm.  The sequences for films like Napoleon Dynamite and Almost Famous make great use of physical objects and the energetic titles for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World combined digital imagery with real-world scratches and grime.  This week, we’ll be doing an in-class group project without using computers.

For this project, I’d like each group to create a title graphic for a made-up film.  You can collage pictures from magazines, cut shapes out of construction paper, draw, sculpt clay, or do something completely different – but you must create the title completely in-camera, with no editing or digital text.  The sequence should be at least five seconds long and there should be some element of movement or animation involved – in other words, it should be more than just a static image.

The titles of the films have been created using a random title generator website.  Have fun!
