Put It All Together
Your final project will also be the most open-ended: create a compelling opening title and credits sequence for the film, show, or event of your choice. It should include name credits and some sort of title reveal (which does not need to take place at the end of the sequence) and it should be between 45 and 90 seconds in length.
You may use any of the techniques we’ve covered in the class: compositing, found footage, text effects, 3D layers, photo manipulation, and more. You should include at least two specific techniques and you may work in Premiere Pro, After Effects, or both. All media used should be either created by you or royalty free – you may incorporate stock footage. Your finished work should have a resolution of 1920 by 1080 and use a frame rate of 24. Export it using either the H.264 or Apple ProRes 422LT codecs.
You will be graded based on the following factors:
- Creativity and Concept (25 points) – What is the central idea behind your sequence and how did you choose to execute it?
- Thematic Consistency (25 points) – How well are color, movement, typeface, imagery, audio, and other elements used? Do they feel unified or disjointed?
- Technical Ability (25 points) – Which techniques did you utilize and how effectively did you use them?
- Meeting Project Requirements (25 points) – Is the project the appropriate length, frame rate, resolution, and format? Was it turned in on time?
I want everyone to have the freedom to work on the kind of piece they want, which is why I’m not including many specific thematic or stylistic requirements. In my experience, this can actually make a project more challenging, so you may want to give yourself some deliberate constraints; you could decide to use only found footage or to work entirely in 3D compositions in After Effects, for example. At the end of the day, it’s really up to you.
The finished sequence is due before midnight on the night of April 23 – we’ll be reviewing them together in class the morning of April 24. Good luck and have fun!
